RPS PULLS TOURISM PHOTOGRAPHY PROJECT

The Royal Photographic Society (RPS) has pulled a controversial amateur photography project after professional photographers protested that it threatened their livelihoods.

The RPS's 'Season doesn't end with summer' project asked members to submit images of the South West that it would pass on to South West Tourism, for use in magazines and newspapers, potentially for free.

The RPS said it launched the project to help promote the work of amateur photographers in the area who are keen to get their photos published for the first time, whether they receive a fee or not.

NIKON CAMERA SALES BOUNCE BACK TO RECORD HIGHS

Nikon notched up record first quarter sales of digital SLRs and compact cameras as the group's operating profits soared 15% on the same period a year ago.

'The Imaging Products Business, despite the effects of the further appreciating yen, managed to record year-on-year increases in both revenue and profit,' Nikon said in a statement today.

'Furthermore, both digital SLR cameras and compact digital cameras marked record highs for the number of units sold for the first quarter.'

PENTAX HQ DITHERS OVER 645D UK LAUNCH DECISION

A decision on whether Pentax will launch its 645D medium-format digital camera in the UK is not likely until at least next month's Photokina.

Pentax's Japanese bosses have yet to confirm whether UK consumers will be able to buy the 40-million-pixel camera, despite it going on sale in Japan in the early summer.

Neither Pentax Japan nor Pentax Europe have announced when a formal decision will be made on the launch, so it is possible UK consumers may have to wait until later this year to find out whether they can buy the camera.

ROW ERUPTS OVER AMATEUR PHOTOJOURNALISM 'PRESS PASS'

Professional journalism bodies have hit out at an amateur 'press pass' that has been launched by citizen journalist website Demotix.

The UK Press Card Authority, which issues media credentials to professional newsgatherers such as those working for the BBC, SKY and ITN, branded the Demotix document as 'hobbyist'.

It warned that the Demotix card does not represent an accredited National Press Card and pledged to alert all UK police forces over its concerns.
